The scholarship is to assist and encourage postgraduate students engaged in research at the University of Canterbury that is relevant to the conservation and sustainable management of the natural and physical resources of the South Canterbury rivers. Preference is given to applicants whose research is focussed on the South Canterbury rivers and, in particular, to those whose research is focussed on the rivers of the Opihi catchment. The Stewart family established the scholarship in 2007 in memory of their parents, Sam and Pam Stewart. The Opihi River and other South Canterbury rivers were important in their lives for aesthetic and recreational reasons.

1. Purpose

The scholarship is to assist and encourage postgraduate students engaged in research at the University of Canterbury that is relevant to the conservation and sustainable management of the natural and physical resources of the South Canterbury rivers.1 Preference is given to applicants whose research is focussed on the South Canterbury rivers and, in particular, to those whose research is focussed on the rivers of the Opihi catchment.

2. Eligibility

criteria 2.1 Applicants must have met the academic requirements for enrolment at the University in the qualifying degree by 10 December.

2.2 Recipients who hold the scholarship for a master’s degree must be engaged in a research project with a credit weighting of at least 90 points.

2.3 Students may not take up the scholarship until any non-academic requirements for the qualifying degree have been completed and credited. Offers of scholarships to applicants whose qualifying degree is the BE(Hons) from the University of Canterbury are conditional on the completion and crediting of ENGR 200 by 15 March in the year following application.

3. Selection process

3.1 One scholarship is available annually.

3.2 The scholarship is awarded by the Council of the University on the recommendation of a selection committee, comprising: a. the Academic Dean of Science (or nominee); and b. a representative of the Stewart family. Page 2 of

In making the recommendation the selection committee considers: a. academic achievement; and b. the relevance and potential benefit of the research to the conservation and sustainable management of the South Canterbury rivers. 1 Preference is given to applicants undertaking research focussed on the South Canterbury rivers1 and, in particular, to those whose research is focussed on the rivers of the Opihi catchment. If, in any year, there is no candidate of sufficient merit, no award is made.

5. Application process

Application must be made online at the Scholarships website2 by 1 November.

6. Tenability

6.1 The scholarship is tenable by full-time master’s and doctoral students engaged in research at the University that is relevant to the conservation and sustainable management of the natural and physical resources of the South Canterbury rivers.1

6.2 The scholarship is tenable for one year.

6.3 The scholarship is co-tenable with any other award, unless the conditions of the other award preclude this.

7. Value and payment schedule

7.1 The scholarship has a value of $2,000.

7.2 The scholarship is paid by direct credit to the recipient’s nominated New Zealand bank account.

8. Conditions of acceptance

8.1 Unless otherwise specified in the offer letter, an offer of a scholarship lapses if it is not formally accepted within one calendar month of the date of the offer.

8.2 Every recipient who has not already enrolled in a programme in accordance with clause 6.1 should normally be so enrolled by 31 March (in the case of master’s students) or 1 June (in the case of doctoral students) in the year following the year of application. A recipient who is unable to be so enrolled must seek permission from the relevant dean to take up the scholarship at a later date. Without this permission the offer of the award is rescinded.

8.3 By accepting the award, recipients permit publication and announcement of their acceptance, and indicate that they are willing to engage in University community activities, such as student mentoring, acting as University ambassadors, and being involved with University publicity as appropriate.

8.4 In the event of a recipient’s withdrawal during tenure of the scholarship from the programme of study for which the scholarship was awarded, the scholarship is withdrawn, and any paid funds may be recovered.

8.5 Continuation of a scholarship is conditional on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations.

8.6 At the conclusion of the tenure of the scholarship, recipients must submit, through the University of Canterbury Foundation,3 a brief report on their research to the representative of the Stewart family.
