Scholarship Overview:

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel is inviting applicants for the PhD Scholarships In Organic Geochemistry and Paleolimnology. The University of Basel Internationals Scholarship are open for the academic session 2022/2023.

This PhD project aims to apply novel proxies based on algal lipid biomarkers and their stable isotopic composition to record changes in algal biodiversity caused by both natural variability and human activities, with a particular focus on the environmental impacts of ancient Roman settlements.

The University of Basel is a university in Basel, Switzerland. Founded on 4 April 1460, it is Switzerland’s oldest University and among the world’s oldest surviving universities. The university is traditionally counted among the country’s leading institutions of higher learning. The associated Basel University Library is the largest and among the most important libraries in Switzerland. In 2020, the university had 13,139 students and 378 professors; international students accounted for 27 percent of the student body.

Scholarship Benefits:

The University of Basel will provide the salary for applicants. The PhD project will be part of a research project funded for four years by the Swiss National Science Foundation. We offer an international, multidisciplinary work environment and excellent research infrastructure, and the student will be employed full-time (100 %).

Scholarship Eligibility:

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities are eligible for the University of Basel Internationals Scholarship.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: PhD degree in Environmental Science, Geochemistry, Organic Chemistry and Organic Geochemistry and Paleolimnology.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • Candidates should have a solid background and interest in (paleo-) limnology and biogeochemistry in aquatic systems. Experience with stable isotope or organic chemistry laboratory techniques will be an advantage given the laboratory focus of this PhD-project. The ability to work independently and within a team and good communication skills, including fluency in English, is essential.
