The European Green Deal aims at zero net greenhouse gasses emissions by 2050. The steel and chemical industries are responsible for a significant fraction of these emissions. Mechanical and chemical recycling of end-of-life waste streams is an important feature in reducing these emissions. While end-of-life steel can easily be recycled, this is not generally true for end-of-life plastics and other wastes. The project aims to reduce emissions by increasing the recycling of unrecyclable waste streams, thereby tackling multiple problems at once.

The research group Materials Science and Technology-DyMaLab is looking for a PhD researcher to contribute to ongoing research on advanced materials used by the automotive and aeronautical industry. These materials include advanced high strength steels, lightweight alloys, polymer composites, nanocomposites, etc. which might be prone to impact or, more generally, high speed deformation processes. Main aim of the PhD is to obtain an enhanced understanding of the impact-dynamic mechanical properties of materials, including the microstructural factors lying at the origin of the observed behaviour. Understanding these properties will result in a better prediction of high speed forming processes, the crashworthiness of car components and impact incidents in the aeronautical industry.

DECIDE will focuses on respiratory and gastro-intestinal syndromes in the three most important terrestrial livestock species (pigs, poultry, cattle) and on growth reduction and mortality in salmonids. For each of these, we will (i) identify the stakeholder needs; (ii) determine the burden of disease and costs of control measures; (iii) develop data sharing frameworks based on federated data access and meta-information sharing; (iv) build multivariate and multi-level models for creating an early warning system. Together, all of this will form the decision support tools to be integrated in existing farm management systems wherever possible and to be evaluated in several pilot implementations in farms across Europe.

Within ESME, the mechatronics research team is looking for a qualified and motivated candidate to perform academic research on fiber optics and predictable physical models towards better thermal characterization of electric motors, targeting a PhD. In this research, the accuracy of (mainly) thermal models of electric motors will be improved using measured data on prototypes. For these measurements, fibre bragg gratings will be integrated in the different parts of the electric motors. Since these sensors are relatively new, many effort will be spent to gain insights in the mounting and calibration in order to obtain reliable and repeatable measurements. Using inverse thermal modelling techniques, the uncertainty on the parameters and states of (finite element) thermal model will be reduced. To limit the computational burden in the inverse process, suitable (parametric) model order reduction techniques, taking into account the multi-rate aspect of the multiphysics models, will be developed.

We are looking for a starting scientist that is interested in preparing and submitting a Baekeland mandate application on a topic related to dietary additives in animals to reduce inflammatory responses in the gut. Baekeland mandates support basic research that – if successful – have clear economic objectives and offers added value to the company involved in the project. The joint University-industry research project is directed towards obtaining a doctorate (PhD) diploma. In the project we aim to evaluate novel dietary additives on intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) activity in the intestinal tract. IAP has been shown to detoxify LPS on the mucosal surface, and thus consequently reduce epithelial barrier defects associated with LPS-induced inflammation. In addition, the project will focus on anti-oxidant activities of these dietary additives, as oxidative stress has been associated with inflammation, unfavourable microbiota shifts towards mucosal expansion of Gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae that thus contain LPS and consequently can cause health problems. The animal species of focus is meat-type poultry, as the performance of these fast-growing animals is highly depending on a beneficial diet-host-microbiota interaction, and the poultry industry is seeking for alternatives to antimicrobials that were commonly used in the past to promote gut health and reduce inflammation. This research project offers a combination of in vivo work, wet lab and dry lab work, ranging from animal experimentation, in vitro work with cell cultures, QPCR, NGS sequencing, immunohistochemistry and histology, and a variety of other techniques, depending on the project progress.

A multi-method investigation into the cultural value and industrial sustainability recycle film cultures in small Western European film industries, financed by Ghent University’s Special Research Fund (BOF). Since the beginning of the new millennium, a significant change took place in the production strategies of European film industries. It appears that many European film industries are increasingly focusing on what one could call “recycle film cultures”. Inspired by Hollywood-like production and distribution techniques, European film industries started to increasingly focus on producing film remakes, sequels, TV spin-offs, franchises, etc. This project aims to investigate the economic and cultural implications of these recently emerged film cultures in small Western European film industries. The main supervisor of this project is Professor Stijn Joye, the co-supervisors are Professor Gertjan Willems and Professor Eduard Cuelenaere. The starting date of the project is 1 September 2022 at the earliest.

The Electrical Energy Laboratory (EELAB) at UGent is involved in a 4-year project “Digital twin for validation DT4V)”. When a company develops a new drivetrain, it must be validated: building prototypes and test them to be sure about well-functioning and lifetime. This costs a lot of time and money to the company. The main goal of the project is to avoid this long and costly procedure, by doing “virtual validation”. This means that we ‘ll predict performance and lifetime of a drivetrain that is not built yet (= not existing in reality). We will start from existing validated drivetrains and lots of measurements “from the field”. Then, virtual validation will be done in 3 scenarios: 1) change in load profile or ambient conditions: e.g. the drivetrain is used in tropic regions; 2) component replacement: e.g. another type of motor is used than in the validation tests, and 3) new family member: e.g. a scaled variant is developed that is 30% more powerful.

Ghent University is a top 100 university worldwide and one of the major universities in Belgium, with more than 44000 students and 15000 staff members. At the department of Electromechanical, Systems and Metal Engineering, we have an open vacancy for a PhD researcher in the mechatronics research group at the campus Kortrijk. The research in our group focuses on modelling, control and optimization of the electromechanical and control aspects of industrial machines, with an emphasis on using Industry 4.0 technologies such as machine vision, AI or digital twins. A digital twin is one of the key Industry 4.0 technologies. It can be defined as a digital replica of a physical system updated with actual sensing information and simulated in synchronism with its physical counterpart. Digital twins can provide deep insight in the behavior and condition of industrial machines, bringing considerable added value to the manufacturing industry. The creation of a digital twin involves properly determining its requirements, creating high fidelity simulation models, coupling with rich sensor data streams from the physical machine and time-critical execution on an edge or cloud platform. As digital twins are a new and promising concept in mechatronics, we have opened a vacancy for a strategic and challenging PhD position with the topic ‘Digital Twins of Mechatronic Systems in the Manufacturing Industry’ under the supervision of Prof. Jeroen De Kooning and Prof. Kurt Stockman. In this PhD, it is our intention to start from a CAD model of an industrial application, and upgrade it to a digital twin by combining a motion simulation with vision data. In the past years, the research group in Kortrijk has built up critical expertise and laboratory infrastructure to support this PhD.

The work will take place in a young and dynamic team of about 22 PhD students, 1 postdoc and 3 technicians focusing on better chemical engineering in the circular economy, with a focus on pre-treatment and downstream processing. This is important, as it is clear that waste is heterogeneous and mechanical and chemical recycling technologies are often very sensitive to certain contaminants. Prof. De Meester has strong ties to industry and knows the waste management landscape very well. The group brings fundamental science to the processes used in waste management companies, but also brings in more innovative approaches.
