Main activities:

This thesis aims at developing probabilistic ST models and AI tools to: a) estimate the potential associations between radiation-induced brain tissue modifications (as observed in MR brain images following RT), the dose of IR absorbed to the brain at a fine spatial scale (e.g. voxels of MR brain images) and the occurrence of cognitive impairment in patients treated with RT for glioblastoma ; b) predict the individual occurrence of cognitive impairment in these patients at an early stage after RT, with a quantification of the associated prediction uncertainties The work will be based mainly on data from the EpiBrainRad cohort [Durand et al. (2015)], which is one of the largest international prospective cohorts of patients treated with chemo-radiotherapy for glioblastoma and who have undergone standardised neuropsychological assessments. This cohort currently includes 224 adults treated for glioblastoma at the Hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière (Paris) or at ICANS (Strasbourg). Since 2015, data are collected prospectively during the clinical follow-up of patients. For each patient, they include: a) clinical characteristics; b) multimodal MR brain images (collected before surgery, before RT and then every 2-3 months after RT), c) CT images used in the planning of brain RT treatment; d) results of an extensive battery of cognitive tests performed before RT and at 12, 24 and 36 months after RT.

Title: PhD Position F/M Ensuring confidentiality in modern Out-of-Order cores

  • Theme/Domain: Architecture, Languages and Compilation
  • Town/city : Rennes
  • Inria Center: CRI Rennes – Bretagne Atlantique
  • Starting date: 2022-10-01
  • Duration of contract: 3 years
  • Deadline to apply: 2022-06-17

Assignment:

By focusing on performances or energy consumption, modern cores lack the possibility to enforce strong security guarantees have the numerous attacks such as Spectre and Meltdown have shown. Side channels have been demonstrated to be possible on such cores, by exploiting timings (cache timing attacks), power consumption or electromagnetic radiation. Out-of-order cores are particularly vulnerable since speculative execution can be tricked into leaking data.

Main activities:

The candidate is expected to propose technical solutions to enforce confidentiality in an out-of-order core, to implement the solutions and evaluate them.

In more details, the work must

  • prevent timing covert channels. A solution has been demonstrated on simpler in-order cores, but should be scaled to a modern out-of-order core.
  • prevent Spectre-like attacks by forbidding or limiting speculation in the relevant situations.
  • propose a RISC-V extension to guarantee constant time execution of instruction sequences.

Skills

Required skills:

  • Hardware design (VHDL, Verilog, SystemC, Chisel, …).
  • Deep knowledge of modern computer architectures.
  • Software programming for embedded systems (C, C++, Rust, …).
  • Bare metal programming: cross-compilation, tuning linker scripts.
  • Can read, write and speak English.
  • Good team member: the core development will be a team effort.

Bonus skills:

  • Hardware security: side channels.
  • Git workflow, continuous integration, …

Benefits package:

  • Subsidized meals
  • Partial reimbursement of public transport costs

Main activities:

This thesis will address the above problems by following a data driven approach seconded by machine learning, where the anomalies will be first categorized and profiled, following controlled experimentation in the lab (OneLab, R2Lab, Mininet, ns-3) to understand their signatures and their most important features. Unsupervised learning can be used in this first phase to characterize the most important anomalies and identify their fingerprints. Using these fingerprints, Supervised Machine Learning models will be then developed to (i) estimate network performance, (ii) detect performance anomalies, and (iii) perform a classification of these anomalies. We will explore the different available options for collecting performance measurements on a user device, either from within the browser or by running a dedicated software, or both options simultaneously. Along this study, the list of possible measurements will be shortened to only keep the most relevant ones for the targeted classification problem. In addition to lab experimentation, the models will be validated over real datasets, either proprietary ones as the ACQUA dataset or the IPL BetterNet dataset, or public datasets as the ones released by MLab and RTR-NetTest. By the end, this PhD work is supposed to lead to concrete solutions of help to the end user transforming her/his local measurements to indicators for her/his access performance and pinpointing the origins of service degradation with the help of the ML models that will be developed for this purpose.

Main activities:

The doctoral student will be part of Acumes Project-Team at Inria Sophia-Antipolis Research Center. Summary:

TRIPOP (Inria Grenoble Rhône-Alpes ; Laboratoire Jean Kuntzmann) team is mainly concerned by the modeling, the simulation and the control of nonsmooth dynamical systems. In mechanics, the main instances of nonsmooth dynamical systems are multibody systems with Signorini’s unilateral contact, set-valued (Coulomb-like) friction and impacts, or in continuum mechanics, ideal plasticity, fracture or damage. The members of the team have a long experience of nonsmooth dynamics modeling together with the development of simulation software.

INRAE’s ETNA Research Unit is recognized for many years at the international level for its work on snow and on protection structures against natural hazards. Its skills relate to physical and digital modeling, laboratory and on-site experimentation, and instrumentation in difficult alpine contexts.

Main activities:

The objective of the PhD is to use non smooth numerical modelling to analyse the physical processes involved in the interaction between complex granular flows interacting with 3D deformable structures.
The main tasks of this research work are to :

  •  develop 3D numerical simulations involving complex granular materials (cohesive, in particular) interacting with deformable structures
  • optimize the numerical model to allow extensive numerical simulations for complex 3D problems on high performance computing architecture
  • perform detailed physical analyses of the interaction not only for simplified configurations but also for complex 3D ones, with a focus on the interplay between the hydrodynamic-like patterns formed (jumps, dead zones, etc.) and the discrete nature of the flowing material and its effect on the resulting impact force

Skills:

The PhD candidate should have competences in mechanics and numerical modelling. A strong theoretical background in fluid and solid mechanics is mandatory. Furthermore, the applicant must show a strong interest for software development in computational Mechanics. He also has to be motivated by applied research in collaboration with researchers from different disciplines. A good level of English and subsequent writing capacities are also requested.
